Welcome to the website of the Education Service for Merthyr Tydfil Museums.

Here you will find information, downloadable resources and links relevant to the history of Wales' foremost 'Iron-town' and our museums and cultural heritage sites.

Our Mission

To provide a stimulating learning experience and exciting interpretation of Merthyr Tydfil's history, museums and heritage to people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.

Who we are

Merthyr Tydfil Museums' Service is a local authority run service and is part of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.

Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery and, Joseph Parry's Ironworkers Cottage are the two registered museums owned and managed by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. The former 'Ynysfach Iron Inheritance Centre' has now closed and the authority is now developing the former furnaces site at the Cyfarthfa Ironworks as an alternative attraction/resource.

Currently one-fifth of all museum users (approx 50,000 per annum) comprise school and formal educational groups.

There is currently one full-time Education Officer who is responsible for the running of all aspects of the service.
