Six of the original row of seven blast furnaces at the former Cyfarthfa
Ironworks site as seen today - one of the most important industrial
archaeological sites in Britain. The furnaces date to the late 18th and early
19th century at a time when Crawshay's Cyfarthfa works was the largest ironworks
in the world.
The furnaces are planned to become the centre-piece of long-term
heritage/tourism interpretative developments at this site in future years.
- Guided tour of the furnaces including inner chambers, passageways
and tunnels under the direction of the Museum's Education Officer is
available. Hard hats and torches are available. For safety reasons, no
more than 30 students may be taken on a tour at any one time.
- A power-point presentation suitable for Key Stages 2 and 3 on the
making of iron with specific reference to the remains visible at the
Cyfarthfa works site is available on request.
- In addition, the Ynysfach Iron Inheritance Centre slide show which
is no longer available due to the closure of the venue has recently
been converted to digital format and is now also available on VHS tape
for loan or on CD-ROM by request.
- A visit to the Cyfarthfa Ironworks site may be combined with a visit
to Cyfarthfa Castle and Joseph Parry's cottage at no extra
charge.
