Regency mansion and former home of the Crawshay family of
ironmasters who ran the nearby Cyfarthfa Ironworks. In 1910, a museum
and art gallery for the town was established in part of the castle.
Today, it houses 'city-status' fine arts and decorative arts
collections as well as object displays devoted to the social and
industrial history of Wales' most significant town of the industrial
revolution.
Talks and tours of the building, which cover a wide variety of topics and
subject areas, can be delivered by the museum's education officer. Please feel
free to discuss your individual requirements.
Worksheets relating to the museum's permanent displays and galleries are
available for download on this website by following the links to Information
-> History OR Art (mainly devoted to Key Stage 2).
Object handling/study sessions are available focusing upon domestic themes
in the past (suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2). Other themes are also
available on request - please ask if in any doubt.
Extensive background historical information including images are
also available
in digital format on request or for download on this website by following the
links to Information -> History OR Art .
An art study pack, recently revised, focusing upon the fine arts in the museum's collection, which
itself has recently been
reorganised on more thematic lines, is also available for download on
this website by following the links to Information -> Art.
Living history museum devoted to the home of a typical
ironworker's family during the mid-19th century. Two rooms on the
ground floor are fitted and furnished in period style and provide an
excellent contrast to the 'state' rooms at nearby Cyfarthfa Castle.
Two rooms on the upper floor are devoted to music and the
life of Joseph Parry - Wales' most famous composer and musician who
was born in this cottage in 1841.
Owing to space constraints, interpretation is limited to a talk by the
museum's education officer for up to 25 students at any one time.
A study pack suitable for Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2 has recently
been prepared by local teachers in co-operation with the Mid Glamorgan
Education Business Partnership.
Please feel free to discuss your individual requirements for a visit.
